Since 2007, our subsidiary, Skul’qalt Forestry LP, has been involved in logging, reclamation, and forest stewardship activities.
Skul’qalt Forestry is a subsidiary business under Smelqmix Investments. Skul’qalt is a for profit business that also focuses on changing and adapting industrial forest standards into sustainable profit. One of the ways Skul’qalt is doing this is by developing their Syilx Forestry Standards and Principles that puts the Syilx Environmental Ethic first, which innovates how Skul’qalt operates and harvests on the land.
Vision: The Syilx Forestry Principles and Standards represent a syilx-centric approach to forestry planning and practice by which Syilx communities wish the forest ecosystems and resources in their Territory to be stewarded for the benefit of the siwɬkʷ and the tmixw. The collaborative stewardship of forest ecosystems and resources in Syilx Okanagan Territory will be guided by the Syilx Forestry Principles and Standards which are derived from syilx snha.wixwtn (protocols/laws) intended to protect, conserve, manage, and where appropriate, develop the lands and waters of the Nation’s territory within a context of forest stewardship.
In the future, our efforts will focus on expanding our remediation and reclamation work. Our goal is to become more involved in the overall management of our rich forest resources.
